North Kansas City based Cerner Corporation gained a new contract with the U.S. Coast Guard while awaiting finalization of a massive agreement with the Department of Veteran Affairs.
Cerner has completed several initial steps for creating a new electronic health records system for the Department of Defense. The $4.3 billion contract continues, however, as the massive installation is expected to require 10 years to complete.
The Coast Guard contract effectively brings that agency into the new system, formally a partnership involving Cerner for creation of the MHS Genesis system. When complete, Genesis will serve 9.4 million beneficiaries at nearly 1,000 locations, including hospitals, clinics, ships and submarines.
