Kearney Mayor Bill Dane died April 9 after decades of serving the community he loved.
Dane will be remembered the most for the challenges he helped Kearney face and overcome. Even in his last days, he was calling from a hospital bed to learn more about successful passage of a $24.3 million bond issue to build Kearney’s second I-35 interchange.
First elected mayor in 1990, Dane saw that Kearney’s future would require planning for growth as something that was certain to come. Those plans ranged from improved fire protection to more park amenities. In addition to his multiple stints totaling 17 years as mayor, Dane also served on the Kearney School Board, the Tax Increment Financing commission and the park board.
Dane’s intellect and dry wit were on display to EDC members during the annual State of the Cities Luncheon where he wove humor, information and an obvious love of the community he helped build.
