Air

Kansas City International Airport

Universally known as one of the most user-friendly major airports in the world, KCI’s innovative design features make it a state-of-the-art facility, particularly in terms of passenger convenience. KCI was the first airport designed using the “drive-to-your-gate” concept, with circular terminal buildings that minimize the distance from curb to aircraft. Baggage claim areas at KCI are strategically situated close to passenger gates. Travelers experience fewer delays at KCI than most major airports.

While some cities’ airports tend to become monopolized by one or two brand names in air travel, KCI has evolved into a center of healthy free-market competition between most major airlines and several emerging low-cost carriers. As a result, air travelers to and from KCI enjoy a wide range of choices, both in scheduling and fares. Every day, more than 290 nonstop flights depart and arrive at KCI – with 17 airlines serving 54 cities. On average, air fares at KCI are 20% less than comparable fares at other major cities.

In 2000, Kansas City began one of the biggest capital projects in the airport’s 27-year history. The $156 million terminal renovation includes numerous new facilities and systems, while maintaining the airport’s superior interior circulation and drive-to-gate convenience.
