Telecommunications Infrastructure

Greater Kansas City’s overall telecommunications infrastructure is highly advanced, reliable, robust and redundant. Unique characteristics include:

• Fiber backbone, protected by 39 Sonet rings, including digital access control, connects all central offices.

• Fiber optic connections are available from multiple vendors to most major buildings and industrial sites.

• The majority of the central offices are equipped with digital switches featuring the latest generic software, signaling system 7 control, and a full array of services throughout the metropolitan area (i.e., ISDN, frame relay, switched digital data, etc.).

• The newest digital-age services include Sprint’s integrated On-Demand network (ION) and Southwestern Bell’s Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL).

• A large pool of telecommunications professionals and knowledge as the best place in the country to do business electronically.

• The Kansas City area has a well-defined strategy to be known as the best place in the country to do business electronically.

Local Telephone Service

• Predominantly provided by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.

• Facilities-based CLEC’s include Birch Telecom, Brooks WorldCom, e.spire and AT&T Local Services (formerly TCG & Kansas City FiberNet).
